The Ukrainian president announced Monday night the start of the Russian offensive against eastern Ukraine. Attacks and counterattacks by Russian and Ukrainian forces are setting the stage for the decisive battle in the war between Moscow and Kiev in the Donbass. Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian army was attempting to surround a Russian army corps that was threatening to encircle Kiev forces.
Russian and Ukrainian offensives and counter-attacks were preparing the ground on Monday for the battle of Donbass and the surrounding regions, which may seal the outcome of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In fact, on Monday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the start of the Russian offensive against eastern Ukraine. “We can now say that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbass, for which they have been preparing for a long time. A very large part of the entire Russian army is now dedicated to this offensive,” he said in a speech broadcast on Telegram.
In a sense, this battle had begun during the day with the surprise offensive of Ukrainian troops from the northeastern city of Kharkiv, aimed at cutting off the supply lines of Russian units holding the city of Izum, and pinning them down with other Ukrainian elements in the south.
